MITCH KURTZ

Pop art, black and white line art, color illustrations, movies, comics, and other forms of fictional entertainment are what drive me to create artwork that I love. I’m really drawn to the bold aesthetic of “comic book” style illustrations with dramatic lighting, dynamic compositions, and specifically thick black outlines around the figures/objects. Throughout my process I was looking at the works of Dan Mumford, Jeff Everette, and most recently, Butcher Billy for inspiration. I really admire the incredible detail and line work of Mumford, the understanding of light and dark by Everette, and Billy’s ability to take a modern subject like a new Netflix show for example, and take it back, stylistically, to the 1960’s. I wanted to capture some of those elements in my work while maintaining a neo-retro comic book vibe. Each title font is unique to each story and an important part of the composition. The titles set the mood for each: tattered font suits Egyptian story, classic “gooey” font suits a cursed story, etc. I kept the human figures in black and white to establish a rhythm and create unity with the series of works. I would really like to explore screen printing more and create posters in the future that are completely screen printed like Dan Mumford’s work. Once I have honed my skill set, I could see myself making illustrations for the entertainment business, making box art, posters, packaging, etc.
