LORNA CROCKETT

My designs and illustrations take inspiration from many sources, mainly other artists, music, and nature. A big influence on my work is Alphonse Mucha, his use of different lines, soft shading and colors, as well as his use of f em ale form are all reflected in my work. I also look to surreal and fantasy artists such as Gerald Brom for inspiration. Stylistically and for expression I look at comic book artists like Adam Hughes. For the content of my work I look to music, taking the feelings from songs and turning them into visual art. Some of the musicians that help me visualize ideas are Florence and the Machine, Foster the People, Gorillaz, and Young the Giant. The songs I use are usually very ambient and narrative. I primarily use motifs found in nature to convey these ideas, such as plants and animals, and insert them into a surreal or fantasy setting. Sculptor Beth Cavener is a big inspiration for the way she portrays animals' spirits in a flowing, elegant style.

My process usually starts with an idea and inspiration, finding references, then drawing on paper or digital tablet. While I use digital tools to render my ideas, I still want them to retain an organic, handmade look. I choose a more painterly style for my illustrations and like to incorporate woodblock and screen printing into my designs. I believe design should be art; that packaging, posters, and materials should have the same level of craftsmanship and creativity as a painting or sculpture.
