CODY DUVALL

As a graphic designer, I aim to create works that invoke nostalgia through traditional methods of mass production, namely printmaking. The series of works showcased here utilize serigraphy, relief printing, plate lithography, and stenciling to advertise local, tourism-heavy events, businesses, and locations on the Eastern Shore. I created these works as a love letter to my home and in celebration of the places that cultivated me as an artist.

Hand-making travel memorabilia speaks to the rural, “git ‘er done” culture of the area as well as pays homage to the history of design itself. My earliest inspirations for this series are Toulouse-Lautrec and Hokusai, two revolutionary printmakers who brought acclaim to a few of the methods that I use. I find these traditional methods to be more rewarding due to the unique aesthetic given by the various quirks of printmaking such as: misalignment, uneven ink coverage, and depth of pigment due to the layering inks.

The overarching theme of designing travel memorabilia for my hometown is to show the strong, welcoming community and breathtaking scenery that radiates from the Rehoboth Beach area. No matter who you are or what walk of life you come from, there is always something beautiful waiting for you by the beach.
